Today, we dive into: How to Stop Panic Attacks
If you would like to jump straight to these tips, click here.

There are ways to deal with stress, avoiding it is not one of them.  As women, we so much on our plates.  Whether it’s moving up the cooperate ladder, taking care of our kids, being the nurturing one in the family, we all have ways of dealing with grief or ways of dealing with stress.

The passage down below is an example of what a panic attack can look like for some of us.

But, I was having a good time

Maggie’s palms begin to sweat as she notices her heart rate is not slowing down.  She can’t figure out what is going on.  The longer it continues, the more frantic she begins to feel. Before she knows it, her throat feels like it’s closing, making it harder to breathe.   As she begins to feel lightheaded, she puts her head between her legs. She spends the next five minutes trying to calm down and catch her breath.

Finally, it comes to a stop.

Confusion sweeps over Maggie as she sits up.  She was having a good day, where did this attack come from?

Maggie’s friend, who had been trying her best to give her some space, now slowly reaches out.  “Do you feel better now? “  She asks, “What was that about?”

“Yeah, I’m good,” replies Maggie.  “But I think I just had a panic attack, and I’m not really sure why.”

What tactics do you think Maggie used to relieve her of the panic attack and have you ever had one?  We can find out down below, let’s go!

Before we dive into how to overcome a panic attack, lets first answer this question.

What is a Panic Attack?

Heart palpitations, dizziness, labored breathing; these are all symptoms of a panic attack.  Believe it or not, you don’t necessarily have to be panicked before you have a panic attack.

This is one of the reasons Maggie (expert above) was confused as to why she had one.  She was having a great time with her friend and then suddenly, the attack overcame her.

This is completely normal.  (caution: heart palpitations can be symptoms of certain underlying illnesses.  You should consult with your doctor if you find yourself having them)

What to do during a Panic Attack

Stop what you’re doing
As soon as you feel yourself get worked up, heart racing, dizziness, stop what you’re doing, safely.  If you’re driving pull over, if you’re cooking turn off the stove, etc.

Find a safe place to sit down
Make sure that you’re aware of your surroundings if you’re outside.  Find a safe place where you feel comfortable being vulnerable. For public areas, maybe go back to your car or find a restroom.

Breathe
Focus only on your breathing, this means to take your mind off of everything else and just breathe.  Deep breathes naturally relax your body and muscles.

Imagine a happy place
If you’re having a hard time with just breathing, imagine the last place you felt the most relaxed and stay there.

Acknowledge its a panic attack
When recognizing you’re having a panic attack you know that it will eventually come to an end.  Remember that you are safe and your body is having a temporary reaction.

We discussed what panic attacks are what to do if we have one. Now we will talk about…

How to prevent them

  1. Try your best to see if there is a consistent stress factor in your life.  This may seem obvious, but it’s not always so easy to spot the non-obvious ones.  Therapy is a great way to not only identify our stressors but, a great way to develop skills to cope with them.
  2. Try to have a morning or nighttime routine.  It’s important to cut out a time of the day that is only for you. You’ll find yourself more centered.
  3. Think about taking a day off. Yes, a whole day, why not?  Don’t wait for the burnout to come, take action now. Related: 21 WAYS TO PAMPER YOURSELF
  4. Try to meditate once in a while.  It can be as short as 10 minutes per day.  Related:MEDITATION AND ITS BENEFITS
