I would like to dedicate this post to a special protege loved one of mine. When she is ready to publish her work, I’ll leave her link here for your viewing.
Now, we have a lot to cover today, so let’s go!
There are 3 steps that need to be taken when selling your art:
1) Have a platform to advertise your art
2) Have a platform to sell your art
3) Have packing supplies to ship your art.
1) Have a platform to advertise your art
Growing an audience and giving people the opportunity to recognize your art work is huge! The easiest way to do this is through a social media platform. There are a large number of platforms you can choose to advertise. Let’s discuss the three most popular ones; Instagram, Facebook, and Pinterest.
There are many artists that turn to Instagram for advertisement. They develop thousands of followers from around the world. If you decide to create an Instagram account, it’s best to familiarize yourself with keywords or hashtags. The video down below explains exactly what these are.
Facebook requires a lot of tedious work of promoting and sharing your art to different accounts. If you already have an account with a large amount of contacts and or followers, then this would be a great option for you. You wouldn’t have to invest that much time in promoting your work if you already have an audience. I’m not going to get into great detail, as most of us know how to create a Facebook account and share content.
Even though Pinterest is not a socail platform, you can navigate it like one with a free business account. Many people use it to promote their small businesses, including myself. The reason I love Pinterest is because the competition is not yet too big that I get overshadowed by other accounts. View the video down below to learn more.
2) Have a platform to sell your art
So now that people recognize your work and have a desire to buy your art, you need to have a website where they can make that purchase. You can sell your art on the following platforms:
Etsy
There are a lot of privately owned businesses and entrepreneurs who sell on Etsy. For good reason, it’s a trusted platform. Etsy has been around for 14 years and many sellers, especially artists, find success using it. There are small fees for listing items or transactions fees. But, we’re talking about mere cents. If you would like to know more about their policies visit there page here > Beginner’s Guide to Selling on Etsy?
eBay
Now eBay has been around for 24 years and they have their own selling fee policies as well, click here. eBay takes 10% of every sale you make, which I personally feel like it’s a bit much. However, it depends on your preferences. Many people just feel comfortable using eBay just because it’s familiar. I’m sure we have at one time sold an old electric device or something of that sort on eBay. If it works for you, great, but just know it’s not your only option.
Amazon
On Amazon you have the option to have a professional or individual selling plan. The professional selling plan costs $39.99 per month (yikes) and the individual plan costs $0.99 per item sold. I would say that if you’re just starting out, go with the individual plan. That is if you don’t see yourself selling more than 10 paintings a month.
Create a Website
Yes, you can create your own website from scratch. I’m not sure how you would do your taxes though, as the bigger websites take care of that for you already,in a way. You do have the ability to customize your website if you make it your own. Godaddy.com is a very popular website to purchase very inexpensive domain names. After you purchase a domain you need to get a host. Bluehost.com has people raving, but there are many websites to choose from. The prices change depending on the website but, I will say expect to spend a minimum of $40 dollars for a full year subscription.
[Bonus Tip] Let’s be honest here, if you don’t feel yet ready to invest in this kind of commitment and money at an early stage, that’s completely fine! If you’re brand new, I would just skip this step. Stick to using the platforms Facebook or Instagram, where people have the option to contact you. If they are interested in your work and they reach out to you, offer them your Paypal email so that they may purchase it that way. It saves you the headache of having to commit to websites, and allows you to save money. But the sooner you feel ready to invest in a website, the more professional you will appear. 🙂
3) Have packing supplies to ship your art
Be sure to include the shipping and handling into your prices. This adds up pretty quickly when orders start to stack up. You may at first want to limit your packages to a certain country, county, or even town. If you live in a large city you have the option of local pickup, but I wouldn’t recommend it, for safety reasons. However, if you decide to do it anyway, be sure to meet in a public place, not your backyard. 🙂
